Kristin Davis debuts her summer collection for an exclusive fashion show at Belk, Phipps Plaza, where JEZ scoops this season’s trends and the buzz about the new Sex and the City movie.
No doubt about it, Kristin Davis has a certain gusto for fashion. While sitting next to the star at her exclusive Atlanta summer preview fashion show for The Kristin Davis Collection, it becomes evident how much energy she devotes to her conservative-chic brand. Even with a booming career (shooting for Couples Retreat just wrapped, and filming for the sequel to Sex and the City: The Movie is right around the corner), Davis manages to stay involved with her clothing line from concept to completion. “I’m involved probably more than they wish,” she told JEZ before the fashion show, laughing. “But you know, I don’t know how to do it any other way. I learned a lot, and I do trust [the design team], but on the other hand, I feel like it’s my name, it’s my face.” And she’s right. Davis is recognized for her glamorous red-carpet presence and the traditional poise of her SATC character, Charlotte, so, naturally, her collection speaks to fans of both. “I do not consider myself a fashionista,” Davis says. “I just do my thing, and my thing is kind of conservative in the fashion world. I would not want to push to be outside my comfort zone.” However, she admits to getting a risk-taking nudge from her self-professed fashion muse and friend, Sarah Jessica Parker. The clean, polished pieces in Davis’ collection also are inspired by style icons Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn, their influence most evident in the vintage patterns and classic, high-waisted silhouettes.
In just over a year, the collection has expanded into a complete brand stocked with jewelry, handbags, sportswear and sunglasses, plus the new swim, shoe and dress lines, and a special favorite for Davis: belts. “Something I really want to talk to women about is belts,” Davis says. “Belts are my favorite, I mean, I carry a suitcase full of belts every time that I travel. Belts are a way to make your outfit truly unique to you.” She puts her hands up to her waist to show off the thick patent-leather belt wrapped about her thin waist. “Right now I’m wearing a wide belt, but you can do a thin belt at the waist or a belt on the hips–anything you want that works with your body.”
As for other trends this season, Davis loves greens, plaids, bright colors and subtle details. “I think green is really important. Green is kind of replacing purple and red in certain ways,” Davis says, indicating the green and white A-line skirt she’s wearing–a soon-to-be-released collection item. “Like, evening-wear in green–which five years ago, no one did evening in green!” Also a big fan of plaids and textured items, Davis says her collection is all about details. “And not flashy [ones],” she specifies. “They’re just little details that nobody else has. They may not cause attention, like ‘look at me, look at me,’ but it’s different and unique and it’s something that someone took care in making. I love a little bit of whimsy, and I don’t want to be too serious. I want to have fun with it. That’s why we did the bright colors for spring.”
Another hot item on everyone’s wish list this year is the coveted gladiator sandal, which Davis’ line features both in flat and heel versions. “The thing that I like about the gladiators [is that] they’re powerful,” Davis says, showing off her dramatic, high-heeled pair. “I could put on a girly dress and a strong shoe, and I think that’s super important. You really can’t go wrong with a pump, but, on the other hand, if you really want to make a statement and you want to feel strong, put on a strong shoe.”
With shoes, dresses and swimwear rolling out to much applause, the restless Davis sees no end in sight. “We have already expanded from my initial department, and I was scared, but I’m glad that the dresses are going well, and I love the swim!” she says.
As the clothing line continues to develop into a recognized label, fans want to know if Charlotte will end up donning The Kristin Davis Collection in the much-buzzed-about Sex and the City: The Movie sequel, set to begin shooting this year. Davis admits she doesn’t know what Patricia Field will use to wardrobe her character. But all the first ladies of Sex and the City have signed on, and are very excited to work together again on the film that’s certain to steal the fashion spotlight yet again. What will happen to Charlotte, Carrie, Miranda and Samantha? According to Davis, there isn’t a set plot. “I haven’t even seen a script,” Davis says. “They are working on it, but I’ll tell you this much, it will be happy.”
